Morgan Reardon led the Ramblers (7-17, 3-12 Missouri Valley), who were eliminated from contention for a berth in the MVC Championship, with a match-high 13 kills in defeat. "We had good fight tonight," said head coach Chris Muscat. "However, we need to execute the details more consistently. We will be ready as we enter next weekend."
Indiana State jumped on Loyola early, scoring the first three points of the match en route to an 8-4 lead. The Ramblers tried to chip away, using kills from Reardon and Emily Carr to get within two, 15-13, and it was a one-point game later (18-17) after a Sycamore error. However, Indiana State was more efficient down the stretch, ripping off seven of the last 10 points to take the opening set, 25-20. Brown was outstanding in the frame, ripping six kills on eight swings to lead the offense.
Brown slammed two more kills early in the second set but a service error and two hitting errors put Loyola in a 10-7 hole. A four-point run moments later helped the Sycamores extend the lead to six (16-10) and the Ramblers faced a 19-11 deficit after an error. The visitors struggled to string points together the rest of the way and a Kyla Thomas kill closed out a 25-18 win that gave Indiana State a 2-0 lead in the match.
Loyola trailed 8-4 in the third set as well before getting back within two, 10-8, on a Reardon solo block. The deficit was still just two (14-12) after a Kelly Feigh ace but Indiana State was able to take control later, using a four-point run to turn a 19-16 lead into a commanding 23-16 advantage and a Kynedi Nalls kill closed out the set, 25-20, and the match.
Reardon was the only Rambler in double figures, finishing with her match-high 13 kills. Brown finished with nine kills, all in the first two sets, while Carr added seven. Stephanie Kinane posted a team-high 12 digs to lead the LU defense. Thomas led the Sycamores with 10 kills.
Loyola returns to action next weekend with a pair of road matches. The Ramblers make the short trip to UIC for a Friday night tilt before heading to Bradley on Saturday night.
