INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A late goal in the second half sent Butler to a 2-1 victory over the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team this afternoon at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The Bulldogs move to 3-2-3 with the win, while the Ramblers drop to 3-2-0.
Neither team was able to establish much of an offensive presence in the opening minutes on a warm afternoon in The Circle City. Ryan Howe notched the first shot of the game in the 10th minute but fired wide of goal. Brian Bement forced a save out of Butler goalkeeper Andy Holte just under ten minutes later when the Waterloo, Ill. product looked to poke home a headed attempt. The hosts were able to take full advantage of their first shot on target when Jeff Adkins ripped a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off the hands of Loyola goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski and into the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Dobrowolski, out of Rockford, Ill., responded well after conceding a goal for only the second time this season, making a pair of saves shortly after.
The freshman duo of Elliot Collier and Brody Kraussel saw to it that the Bulldog lead was short lived. Kraussel connected with Collier in the 30th minute, which led to the Hamilton, New Zealand product firing a shot from 15 yards out that snuck inside the far post to bring the Ramblers back on level terms. Dobrowolski recorded his third save of the half in the 42nd minute to send the game to halftime all square at 1-1.
Chances were at a premium to begin the second stanza. Adkins bid for a second goal sailed high in the 53rd minute, while John Cappuccitti had his attempt blocked in the 61st. A.R. Smith and Bement, respectively, were each shown a yellow card just two minutes apart of one another in the middle stages of a physical half. David Goldsmith put the Bulldogs back on top in the 74th minute when he scored from 20 yards out, firing his shot over Dobrowolski and into the back of the net.
Now a goal down with just over a quarter of an hour to play, Loyola went on the attack in search of an equalizer. A recently substituted Jacob Thoreson missed high in the 84th minute as time continued to tick away. The Ramblers' best chance to even the game up came with only 25 seconds remaining when Brian Lunar ripped a shot that rung off the post. That turned out to be the closest Loyola would come as Butler escaped with a 2-1 win.
The Ramblers will return to action when they take on Valparaiso on Tuesday evening to close out a stretch of four consecutive games away from home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Valparaiso, Ind.
