CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball outhit Lindenwood .346 to .099 en route to a 25-15, 25-15, 30-28 sweep on Saturday Night. With the win, the Ramblers improve to 13-0 on the season and 5-0 in MIVA play. Thomas Jaeschke led the team with a match-high 14 kills, while also adding a career-high six service aces.
The first set began with the teams trading points until Loyola scored four unanswered, including two kills from Jaeschke, to take a 9-5 lead. The Ramblers increased the lead to 14-7 after a pair of Lion errors and kills from Cody Caldwell and Ben Plaisted, forcing a Lindenwood timeout. The Lions were able to score once out of the timeout, but a kill from Caldwell and back-to-back service aces from Jaeschke ran up the score to 17-8. Loyola was able to close out the set behind numerous Lindenwood errors, as well as a kill and a block from Owen McAndrews, to take a 1-0 lead.
The two teams traded points to begin the second set, until back-to-back kills from Caldwell and McAndrews gave the Ramblers a 9-8 lead. The Lions then rallied to take a one point lead, but Caldwell and Jaeschke combined for five straight points to give Loyola the 15-11 lead and force a Lindenwood timeout. The Ramblers went on to score 10 of the next 14 points to win the set 25-15, holding the Lions to a mere -.077 hitting percentage.
The Ramblers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to open the third set behind kills from McAndrews and Plaisted, along with back-to-back service aces from Jaeschke. After a kill from Jeff Jendryk increased the Loyola lead to 8-3, the Lions rallied to score four unanswered points and force a Rambler timeout. The teams battled back-and-forth until Loyola put together a 4-0 run, led by kills from Jendryk and Plaisted and a block from Jaeschke and Jendryk, to pull ahead 18-14. However, Lindenwood was able to cut the lead to 22-21 and the teams traded points until three straight kills from Jaeschke ended the set at 30-28, giving the Ramblers the 3-0 victory.
Loyola will have a week off before returning to Gentile Arena on Monday, March 9 for a showdown with No. 2 Lewis.
