ROMEOVILLE - The No. 2 Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team suffered its second loss of the season on Wednesday night, falling to No. 4 Lewis in four sets (25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 25-23). The Flyers outhit the Ramblers .248 to .154 over four sets while also adding 18 team blocks to Loyola's seven. Jaeschke recorded his fifth double-double of the season after tallying a match-high 19 kills and 14 digs, while Cody Caldwell and Ben Plaisted each added four kills apiece.
The Ramblers scored three straight points to begin the first set behind back-to-back kills from Caldwell and Jaeschke, followed by a Caldwell ace. After trading points, the Flyers rallied to tie the game, but a Jaeschke kill put the Ramblers back on top, 9-8. The teams continued to battle back-and-forth until two straight kills from Jaeschke gave the Ramblers a 19-17 lead, forcing a Lewis timeout. The two teams traded points out of the timeout until Loyola scored three of the last four, including a kill from Jeff Jendryk, a Jaeschke service ace and a Caldwell kill, to end the first set, 25-22. Loyola outhit the Flyers .385 to .105 in set one, with Jaeschke racking up eight kills on a .667 hitting percentage.
The second set began with the two teams trading points back-and-forth until Lewis scored four unanswered to take a 7-4 lead and force a Loyola timeout. Lewis maintained the steady lead until back-to-back points upped the score 14-9, forcing Loyola to use its second and final timeout of the set. Loyola managed to pull within three points after a kill from Jendryk and block by Nicholas Olson and Ben Plaisted, but the Flyer offense continued to click as Lewis increased the lead to 20-14. Lewis then scored five of the next seven points to win the second set, 25-16, behind a .520 hitting percentage.
The Flyers jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the third set before an Olson kill ended the run. Loyola was able to cut the lead to two points, but Lewis responded with back-to-back points of its own to take an 8-4 lead and force a Rambler timeout. Loyola slowly chipped away at the lead until back-to-back points from Jaeschke, a kill and a service ace, tied the set at 16-16 and forced a Lewis timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout until back-to-back kills gave the Ramblers a 20-18 lead, their first of the set. However, Lewis rallied to score seven of the next nine points, including the last five of the set, to claim the 25-22 victory and take a 2-1 lead.

After two kills apiece from Plaisted and Caldwell, the Ramblers scored three unanswered points to pull within one, but Lewis responded by scoring six of the next seven to take a 19-13 lead. The Ramblers then put together a string of runs, capped by back-to-back kills from Plaisted and Caldwell and a block by Peter Hutz and Olson, to take a 22-21 lead and force a Lewis timeout. However, Lewis stormed out of the timeout to score four of the next five points and win set four, 25-23.
