MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Senior Jessica Bean's first goal of the season lifted the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team to a 2-1 win in overtime against South Dakota State on Friday afternoon at the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. With the win, Loyola's second in as many games, the Ramblers move to 4-2-1 overall, while the Jackrabbits slip to 3-3-0.
"I'm so proud of this group," Loyola head women's soccer coach Barry Bimbi said. "They fight so hard for each other. We get closer and closer each day, and it is translating into wins on the field. We'll make our deposits tonight so we're ready to compete again on Sunday against a quality Northern Arizona team."
South Dakota State looked to come out on the front foot on a cool afternoon in Milwaukee, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Ford into a pair of early saves in the first ten minutes of play. Senior Kara Ruffolo notched the Ramblers' first attempt of the day when she fired wide of goal in the 23rd minute. Just seven minutes later, freshman Taylor Lambouris recorded the Maroon & Gold's opening shot on goal.
Following a Jackrabbit turnover in the middle third, junior Shelby Koch found herself with space. The Mill Creek, Wash. native unleashed a blast from well over 30 yards out that sailed past Nicole Inskeep, the South Dakota State netminder, and into the back of the net to give Loyola a 1-0 edge in the 35th minute. The Rambler defense continued its strong play of late, closing out the opening stanza to cement a one-goal halftime lead.
The Jackrabbits came out firing following the intermission and were rewarded in the 54th minute when Diana Potterveld bested Ford from 24 yards out to level the game at 1-1. Ford, out of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., bounced right back two minutes later to deny Dani Patterson's shot, keeping the game level. Loyola looked to be the aggressors as the half wore on, with Koch, freshman Jenna Szczesny and Bean all forcing saves out of Inskeep, but was unable to breakthrough as the two teams headed to overtime for a second consecutive meeting.
Ford found herself busy from the onset in the opening extra session, first stopping a Potterveld shot and then turning away Madison Yueill's chance for a goal off the ensuing rebound in the 92nd minute. Just 43 seconds later, Bean set off a wild celebration when she ripped a shot over Inskeep from 32 yards out to give the Ramblers their second overtime victory of the season.
Loyola will go in search of its third-straight win on Sunday morning when it concludes play at the Marquette Invitational by taking on Northern Arizona at 11 a.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
