PEORIA, Ill. - The Loyola University Chicago volleyball team extended its win streak to 11 games with a three-set sweep of Bradley (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) in Thursday night's Valley opener. The streak is the longest since the 2002 season and the third longest in program history. With the win, the Ramblers improve to 12-2 on the season and 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Morgan Reardon posted her fifth double-double of the season, recording a match-high 11 kills and 13 digs, while Gabi Maciagowski matched her career-highs with 10 kills and a team-high five blocks.
The Ramblers raced out to a 5-0 lead to open the first set, as Reardon and Sami Hansen each recorded a kill while Maciagowski and Maureen Carls combined for a block. The teams then battled back-and-forth until Loyola scored four unanswered points, led by kills from Brittany Brown and Amanda Cushen and a Maddy Moser service ace, to up the lead to 13-5, forcing Bradley to use its final timeout. The Braves managed to pull within four points, but back-to-back Cushen kills and a service ace from Carls upped the lead to 19-13 and the Ramblers went on to claim set one, 25-16.
After trading points to begin set two, Loyola scored three straight behind kills from Cushen and Hansen, along with a Bradley error, to take an 11-8 lead, forcing the Braves to use a timeout. The Ramblers continued to rally out of the timeout, scoring five of the next seven points, including kills from Reardon and Maciagowski and a service ace from Stephanie Kinane, to increase the lead to 16-10. After Brown upped the score to 20-13 with back-to-back kills, Loyola held on to win set two, 25-15, and take an overall two-set lead.
The teams traded points to begin set three until Loyola scored three straight, including kills from Maciagowski and Reardon and a double stuff by Maciagowski and Carls, to take a 12-9 lead and force a Bradley timeout. The Braves rallied to score four of the next six points and pull within one, but kills from Reardon, Brown and Carls then increased the lead to 18-14, forcing Bradley to use its final timeout. The Braves scored the first point out of the timeout, but the Ramblers responded by scoring the next five behind a trio of Bradley errors, a Moser service ace and a block from Hansen and Maciagowski to up the lead to 23-15. Loyola held on to take set three, 25-18, and claim its eighth sweep of the season.
