In Short...
Wichita State used a 17-2, second-half run to blow open a close game and cruised to an 80-54 win over Loyola tonight at Koch Arena. The win runs the Shockers' homecourt winning streak to 42 games. Montel James and Earl Peterson led the Ramblers with 11 points apiece.
How It Happened
+ Wichita State scored the first eight points of the game before Donte Ingram got Loyola on the board with a pair of free throws
+ The Ramblers missed their first nine shots before a Montel James dunk at the 14:51 mark
+ Loyola continued to struggle to find the range and a 12-2 Wichita State run gave the home team a 24-8 lead with 8:28 left in the opening half
+ The Shockers led by as many as 19 in the opening 20 minutes but James scored six points as the Ramblers closed the half on a 7-1 run to head into the locker room trailing by just 13 (37-24)
+ After shooting just 28% in the first half, Loyola hit 5-of-6 from the floor to start the second half and were within 11, 47-36, six minutes into the period
+ However, a Zach Brown jumper ignited a 23-4 run that gave the Shockers a 70-40 lead and they would cruise from there
+ After shooting 28% in the first half, Loyola shot 54% after halftime to finish at 39% for the game
+ Wichita State's offense was clicking all night, as it shot 57% in the first half and 52% in the second period to finish at 54% for the game
Inside The Box Score
+ James scored all 11 of his points in the first half, going 0-for-1 from the floor and committing two turnovers in nine second-half minutes
+ He was joined in double digits by Earl Peterson, who scored nine of his 11 points in the second half
+ Milton Doyle struggled through a rough shooting night, scoring six points on 2-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-5 from the foul line, but pitched in with six rebounds and four assists
+ Doyle missed a pair of free throws at the 6:48 mark of the second half and sits on 999 career points
+ Despite a 3-for-9 shooting night, Donte Ingram contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds
+ The 80 points given up by the Ramblers equals the most that they have allowed in regulation to a Missouri Valley team since joining the league in 2013 (80 at UNI, Feb. 12, 2014)
+ Loyola entered the game second in the MVC in free throw shooting (72.8%) but were just 10-of-17 (58.8%) from the stripe tonight
+ The Ramblers finished with a 32-30 edge in points in the paint but the Shockers enjoyed a 14-7 advantage in second chance points and outrebounded LU, 40-30, for the game
+ Devon Turk missed the game with a hamstring injury, the first game he has missed in his Loyola career (played in 120 straight games)
