How it Happened
In a back-and-forth first set that saw six tie scores and six lead changes, Loyola managed to come on top. Although IPFW recorded four more kills than Loyola in the first set, the Ramblers outhit the Mastodons .206 to .135, committing just four attack errors to IPFW's 10. Peter Hutz orchestrated a balanced offense, as four Ramblers recorded at least two kills. A late three-point run sealed the deal for the Ramblers, as Ricky Gevis and Jeff Jendryk each fired kills before teaming up for a block to give Loyola the 24-22 advantage.
The second set began much like the first, with the two teams battling back-and-forth until Loyola scored three unanswered points, including a solo stuff from Nick Olson and a kill from Collin Mahan, to take a 17-15 lead. IPFW managed to cut the lead to one on multiple occasions, but Loyola held to claim set two, outhitting the Mastodons .583 to .333. Trevor Novotny and Jendryk led the Ramblers in set two, combining for 11 of the team's 16 kills.
The Ramblers raced out to a 5-1 lead to open set three and never looked back, eventually running up the score to 18-9. However, IPFW put together multiple short runs to rally and pull within three points, cutting the score to 22-19. After back-to-back kills from Owen McAndrews and Ryan Jamison, a Peter Hutz service ace ended the match. The Rambles were led by Jamison and Nick Olson in set three, who combined for nine kills.
