In Short…
No. 4 Loyola used a late rally to defeat Quincy on Saturday night, narrowly edging the Hawks after forcing a fifth set for just the second time this season. With the win, the Ramblers extend their win streak to seven and improve to 7-2 overall (2-0 MIVA), while Quincy drops to 4-7 (0-3 MIVA).

How It Happened
After trading points to open set one, Trevor Novotny carried Loyola into the lead, firing five kills to up the score to 13-8. After a pair of kills from Ricky Gevis, a Nick Olson service ace gave the Ramblers a 17-9 lead. From that point, Loyola never allowed Quincy to cut the deficit to fewer than six points, and went on to handily win the set.

Loyola used a four-point run to take a 14-12 lead in set two, led by a kill and a block assist from Jeff Jendryk, along with a Gevis service ace. After upping the lead to 17-14 on back-to-back kills from Gevis and Hutz, Quincy rallied to score six of the next eight points and pull to within one. A Gevis kill eventually gave Loyola the 24-22 advantage, but the Hawks scored four straight points to claim the set. The second set marked the only frame that Quincy outhit Loyola, as the Hawks posted a .235 clip to the Ramblers' .171.

Quincy put together a five-point run to take a 19-14 lead in three, and eventually upped the score to 24-20. Loyola then fought off three consecutive set points, including a kill and a block assist from Gevis, before Quincy ended the set with a kill. Gevis and Collin Mahan combined for nine of the team's 13 kills in the third set, while Olson accounted for four of Loyola's five total blocks.

Loyola jumped out to a 15-12 lead to open set four, capped by back-to-back points from Olson. A three-point Quincy run cut the deficit to one point, but the Ramblers never surrendered the lead, winning the set on a double block from Novotny and Olson. The Ramblers just edged Quincy in set four, tallying one more kill and one more block than the Hawks.

Quincy scored the first three points of set five, but back-to-back points from Jendryk capped a 4-1 Rambler run to tie the set. Loyola continued to rally, scoring five of the next six points to up the score to 9-5 before six straight kills ended the set, giving Loyola the victory. Jendryk and Novotny led the Ramblers' fifth-set rally, combing for six of the team's eight total kills.
