No. 12 Loyola earned its second sweep in as many contests on Friday night with a victory over Lindenwood, as the Ramblers defeated the Lions for the second time this season. The Ramblers tallied a season-high 12 service aces in the victory, including three apiece from Trevor Novotny and Will Tischler.
Nicholas Olson led the Ramblers with nine kills, committing just two errors en route to posting a .500 hitting clip, while Ben Plaisted matched his season-high eight kills. Defensively, Loyola tallied double-digit blocks for the second straight match, with Olson totaling a team-high five block assists, while Novotny, Plaisted and Jeff Jendryk recorded four apiece.
How it Happened
Lindenwood took an early 5-1 lead and held steady until Will Tischler fired back-to-back service aces to cut the deficit to one point. The Ramblers then scored four of the next six points, including a kill and a block assist from Trevor Novotny, to take a 21-20 lead. After Loyola scored the next three straight points to up the lead to four, a Novotny kill ended the set, 25-21.
In a back-and-forth second set that saw 23 tie scores and 10 lead changes, neither team led by more than two points throughout the frame. Despite Lindenwood outhitting Loyola .333 to .167, the Ramblers tallied four more service aces and two more blocks to eventually come out on top, 34-32. Ben Plaisted led the offense with four kills during the set, while Trevor Novotny recorded two of his three service aces, one of which was the final point of the set.
The Ramblers carried the momentum into the third set, racing out to an early 10-4 lead and forcing Lindenwood to use both timeouts during the stretch. The Lions eventually managed to cut the deficit to four, but back-to-back kills from Trevor Novotny and Nicholas Olson upped the Rambler lead to 22-16, and Loyola held on to win the frame and claim the sweep.
