CHICAGO (November 15, 2017) – Clayton Custer (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest/Iowa State), a junior guard on the Loyola University Chicago men's basketball team, has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, it was announced today. A finance major, Custer is earning the award for the fourth time in his career.

In wins over Wright State and Eureka to open the 2017-18 season, the 6-foot-1 guard contributed 12.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the field. Against Wright State in the season opener on November 10, Custer chipped in 18 points, four rebounds and three steals, while hitting 7 of 12 shots from the field, to propel the Ramblers to an 84-80 victory and their sixth straight season-opening win.

He came back two days later to contribute six points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal in only 21 minutes of action, in a 96-69 victory over Eureka.

Custer has been lauded for his achievements in the classroom throughout his Loyola career, earning MVC First Team Scholar-Athlete and I-AAA Scholar-Athlete Team recognition in 2016-17.

To qualify for MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Loyola is back in action Thursday night when it visits UMKC at 7 p.m. in a game that will be carried live in the Chicago area on NBC Sports Chicago+.
