KANSAS CITY (November 16, 2017)

In Short
Playing in front of his hometown fans, Clayton Custer scored a team-high 20 points, including 11 straight at one point in the second half, while Aundre Jackson added 18, to lead Loyola University Chicago (3-0) to a come-from-behind, 66-56 victory over UMKC (1-3) tonight at Municipal Auditorium. This marks the second straight year Loyola has started a season with three straight wins.

How It Happened
A stingy Loyola defense limited UMKC to just 31 percent from the field (9-for-29) in the opening half, but was done in by 10 turnovers, while hitting just 1 of 7 shots from beyond the arc.

The Ramblers used an 8-0 run, capped by a conventional three-point play from Cameron Satterwhite, to turn a three-point deficit into a 10-5 advantage. Minutes later a three-point play by Jackson put Loyola on top, 17-12, but from there, the Ramblers went cold, misfiring on their next five shots, while also committing six turnovers, as the Kangaroos surged ahead, 26-18. A layup by Marques Townes just before the first-half horn sent Loyola into the break down only six (26-20).

Jackson played a huge part in an initial surge to open the second half, scoring seven points in an 11-3 Loyola run that put the Ramblers back ahead, 31-29. The host Kangaroos would rally back and lead by as many as four points in the second half before Custer took over and brought his, and fellow Kansas City area native Ben Richardson's, cheering section to its feet.

With Loyola trailing 44-41, Custer nailed a jumper, then followed with a three-pointer that allowed Loyola to reclaim the lead for good, at 46-44. From there, the redshirt junior scored on three layups and hit another jumper in a game-changing 17-2 run that gave the Ramblers a 58-46 advantage.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Custer hit 7 of 11 shots from the field and added three assists in his 20-point performance.
  • Jackson tallied 18 points and Townes scored in double figures for his third straight game, totaling 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • Donte Ingram finished with eight points and eight boards.
  • Loyola shot 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the field in the second half.
  • Broderick Robinson led UMKC with 16 points.
