In Short
Loyola University Chicago (5-0) rallied from a five-point deficit early in the second half to get past upstart Mississippi Valley State (0-5), 63-50, tonight at Gentile Arena. The Ramblers have now won 13 straight non-conference contests at Gentile Arena and are 5-0 for the first time since 2010-11.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, but Mississippi Valley State was able to close out the period by outscoring the Ramblers, 5-2, over the final 2:24 to take a 31-28 lead at the intermission.
Â
Dante Scott's layup opened the second-half scoring to extend the Delta Devils' lead to 33-28, their largest of the game, before Loyola kicked it into another gear. A three-pointer from junior guard
Marques Townes cut the MVSU lead down to two points, but Arinze Anakwenze followed with a jumper to double the Delta Devils' advantage.
Â
From there, however, Loyola reeled off nine unanswered points as part of an overall 23-6 run that ended with the Ramblers holding a 54-41 lead. Ingram, who was held to just one point and three rebounds in the first half, scored eight points during that game-changing run, while Townes added six in that stretch, to power the Loyola rally.
Â
Mississippi Valley State would get no closer than 11 points the remainder of the way and the Rambler defense stiffened in the second 20 minutes, holding the Delta Devils to a mere 28.6 percent (8-for-28) from the field, including 0-for-3 from three-point territory.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
