In Short
Kiley Jones struck out five in a complete-game performance, but was outdueled by Katie Malone as Wichita State (19-12, 6-2 MVC) earned a doubleheader sweep with a 3-0 victory over Loyola University Chicago in game two of a twin bill at a chilly Loyola Softball Park this afternoon. With the loss, the Ramblers fall to 17-13 overall and 0-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
How It Happened
Macklin Hitz’s one-out double down the right field line in the top of the second inning broke a scoreless tie and gave the Shockers an early 1-0 lead. Jones was able to work her way out of jams in the third, fifth and sixth innings and keep the Ramblers in the game, as Wichita State left six runners on base in those three frames.
Loyola wasn’t able to string together much offense against Malone, who was working her second game of the day, as it managed just two hits through the first five innings. However, trailing 1-0, the Ramblers mounted a huge rally in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Kasubke’s one-out double was followed by a Shannon McGee single and Alyssa Mannucci went on to coax a walk from Malone to load the bags with Ramblers with one out.
Malone did her best Houdini impersonation, inducing a pair of ground ball outs to escape without any damage. The Shockers would add two insurance runs in the seventh to put the game away, with Madison Perrigan’s solo homer to left center being the big blow in the inning.
A Look At The Numbers
- Kasubke finished 2-for-2 and also drew a walk, reaching base in all three of her plate appearances.
- Jordyn Cordell and Alyssa Sclafani also recorded hits for the Ramblers.
- Perrigan accounted for two of Wichita State’s seven hits in the game.
