Custer Named Senior CLASS Award First Team All-America

Loyola guard recognized for excellence in the classroom, community, character and competition

CHICAGO (April 8, 2019) – Add another award to the haul of Loyola University Chicago redshirt senior guard Clayton Custer (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest/Iowa State), who has been named a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American. Joining Custer on the first team was Mike Daum (South Dakota State), Ethan Happ (Wisconsin), Luke Maye (North Carolina) and Reid Travis (Kentucky).

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are using their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring.

Custer had a remarkable career at Loyola, playing three seasons in Rogers Park after transferring from Iowa State. A year ago, he helped the Ramblers captivate the nation with an improbable run to the NCAA Final Four, earning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, National Jesuit Player of the Year and Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year recognition as Loyola posted a school-record 32 wins.

This season, he earned Third Team All-MVC accolades and was a Google Cloud Third Team Academic All-American, while helping lead the Maroon and Gold to a second straight MVC regular-season championship and National Invitation Tournament (NIT) berth.

Last week he made his final appearance in a Loyola uniform unforgettable by winning the Men's 3-Point title at the 2019 State Farm Slam Dunk and #-Point Championships in Minneapolis.

Loyola finished the 2018-19 season with a 20-14 overall record and earned a postseason berth for a second straight season, marking the first time that has happened in Rogers Park since 1963 and 1964.
