CHESTERTON, Ind. (September 17, 2019) – Junior
Devin Johnson and sophomore
Nate Vance both capped off strong 54-hole efforts to pace the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team on the final day of the Crusader Collegiate in Chesterton, Ind.
Â
The Maroon & Gold fired a final-round one-over-par 289 to finish play at the Sand Creek Country Club (par 72, 6,972 yards) with a team total of 868 (286-293-289). Wright State (284-283-286=853) held on to its lead from the first day of play to take home the team title, while North Dakota State's Van Holmgren used a final-round six-under-par 66 to claim individual medalist honors at 207 (70-71-66).
Â
"It was a pretty good week for us," Loyola head men's golf coach
Erik Hoops said. "We had balanced scoring across the board and kept ourselves in the hunt going into the final day. Tee-to-green we were good enough to make a run at it, but just couldn't seem to get a putt to drop and find some momentum. Having three guys in the top 15 shows how well we stacked up against a solid field, and our 54-hole team score is the best since I've been back with the program."
Â
Loyola was led on the day by Vance, who turned in the top 18-hole showing of his career. The Marshalltown, Iowa native finished the day with four birdies en route to a two-under-par 70 that saw him climb up into a tie for eighth on the final leaderboard with a 214 (72-72-70). Just two shots ahead of Vance was Johnson, who closed play with a one-under-par 71, turning in his third straight round under par at the event. The Geneva, Ill. native finished with a four-under-par 212 (71-70-71), landing in fifth place.
