All-Around Effort Helps Loyola Soar Past Indiana State, 75-55

Tate Hall scores 23 points, Krutwig narrowly misses another triple-double

CHICAGO (January 22, 2020)

In Short
Tate Hall tied a season high with 23 points and Cameron Krutwig just missed out on his second triple-double in a month, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, as Loyola University Chicago (14-6, 6-1 MVC) jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back on the way to a 75-55 victory over Indiana State (10-8, 3-4 MVC) tonight at Gentile Arena. The Ramblers, who have now won four straight games, shot 67.4 percent (31-for-46) from the field and hit 8 of 12 shots (.667) from beyond the arc tonight to earn their 22ndwin in their last 24 Missouri Valley Conference games at Gentile Arena.

Coach Moser's Thoughts
"I'm happy with how we came out ready to play. We were on it defensively against a team that is hard to guard. I'm proud we maintained the intensity throughout the game."

How It Happened
Both teams got off to a slow start, with each committing a turnover on their first three possessions before finally settling in. Loyola scored seven straight points after the Sycamores had final scored the game's first tallies, and later assembled a 14-3 run that featured threes from Tate Hall and Keith Clemons, to expand the lead to 27-10, and never looked back

The Ramblers would go on to lead by as many as 20 points in the opening period, extending the advantage to 36-16 on an Aher Uguak layup late in the half.

Loyola shot 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while handcuffing the Sycamores, frustrating them into 35 percent (7-for-20) shooting and eight turnovers to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Indiana State cut into the deficit, getting within 43-28 early in the second period before a 7-0 Ramblers run, punctuated by a three from Lucas Williamson, moved the Loyola edge to 50-28. Minutes later, a Hall layup on a fast break extended the Maroon and Gold's advantage to 54-30, its largest of the game to that point.

Loyola, which shot a scorching 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the field in the second half alone, would lead by as many as 27 points, at 72-45, with 4:07 left to play, following Hall's fourth three-pointer of the night, and would coast to the victory.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Hall was nearly perfect on the night, draining 9 of 10 shots from the field, including 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, while also adding three boards, three steals and a pair of assists. His 23 points matched a season high set in November versus Coppin State.
  • Franklin Agunanne pumped in a season-best 10 points off the bench and ripped down three rebounds in only 10 minutes of action and Marquise Kennedy contributed nine points.
  • Uguak added eight points and five rebounds.
  • As impressive as Loyola's offensive showing was, it set the tone with a suffocating defense that forced 15 Indiana State turnovers. The Ramblers also held the Sycamores' leading scorer, Tyreke Key (18.1 ppg), to just eight points on 3 of 11 shooting.
