Johnson Shares Fifth Place At Bash At The Beach

Ramblers finish ninth in team race

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 10, 2020) – Junior Devin Johnson capped off an impressive 54-hole stretch with his second under-par round of the past two days to lead the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team on the final day of the Bash at the Beach in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Maroon & Gold carded a final-round two-over-par 288 to finish ninth in the team standings at 868 (286-292-290).  UNC-Wilmington (279-280-283=842) took home the team title after winning a playoff with Jacksonville State (278-286-278=842), while the Seahawks' Segundo Oliva Pinto claimed individual medalist honors after closing the event with an 11-under-par 205 (65-73-67).

"It was a solid week for us," Loyola head men's golf coach Erik Hoops commented.  "The course was scoreable and we made a lot of birdies to keep ourselves in the hunt.  Some of those other scores just come from sharpening some things up when we start getting outside on grass in the spring."

Johnson finished off a successful two days in The Palmetto State, turning in a one-under-par 71 during final-round play to finish as part of a tie for fifth place with a six-under-par 210.   Also earning a top-20 finish was senior Justin LaFrance.  LaFrance shot an even-par 72 to earn a share of 16th with a two-under-par 214 (67-75-72).

Sophomore Nate Vance tied for 36th with a two-over-par 218 (74-71-73) after recording a one-over-par 73, while freshman Timmy Crawford posted his second strong showing in as many rounds, handing in a two-over-par 74 en route to finishing tied for 69th at 226 (80-72-74).  Freshman Zach Walsh finished the 54-hole event with his top individual round, posting a 78 to take 92nd with a 242 (83-81-78).

Redshirt junior Nick Welden led Loyola's duo of individuals, tying for 88th at 240 (79-78-83).  Junior Tyler Anderson placed 96th at 244 (82-81-81).

"Devin and Justin were great this week," Hoops continued.  "They really did a great job of leading the team and showed that when they're on, they're as good as any.  Now it just comes down to getting everyone to peak in a little over a month for Flossmoor."

Loyola is back in action in just under two weeks at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo., March 23-24.
