Four Ramblers Honored As WGCA All-American Scholars

Meyers, Martinez, Meier, Thielbar honored by organization

CHICAGO (July 6, 2021) – For the second time in as many years, four members of the Loyola University Chicago women's golf team have been selected as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), the organization announced on Tuesday.   The Maroon & Gold's quartet of honorees tied for third amongst Missouri Valley Conference institutions.

Senior Abbey Meyers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and junior Lorenza Martinez (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) were repeat selections from 2019-20, while the freshman pairing of Kate Meier (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Abby Thielbar (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) also earned recognition.

Meyers closed out her time in Rogers Park by posting a single-season career-best 81.6 stroke average that ranked fourth overall on the Rambler roster.  An accounting and information systems double major, she recorded six rounds in the 70s, highlighted by an 18-hole career-low tying 76 during the final round of the FAU Paradise Invitational.

Martinez turned in another impressive campaign in 2020-21, closing the season with a team-best 78.5 stroke average that was highlighted by a team-high 12 rounds in the 70s.  A two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection, Martinez, who majors in marketing, led Loyola at the MVC Championship, tying for 15th overall with a 239 (78-79-82).

An advertising & public relations major, Meier saw action in 15 rounds during her debut season with the Ramblers.  She posted her top 54-hole effort of the year at the Spring Break Shootout, firing a 239 (79-76-84) that included an 18-hole season-low 76 during second-round action.

Thielbar, who majors in neuroscience, enjoyed a breakout freshman campaign with the Maroon & Gold, wrapping up the year ranked second on the team in stroke average with a 78.8 mark.  Of her eight rounds in the 70s or lower, none were better than her opening-round 69 at the Spring Break Shootout that matched the program's 18-hole record.  Thielbar finished the event with a 54-hole program-best 217 (69-76-72) to tie for 10th place.

A total of 1,432 women's collegiate golfers were recognized on the WGCA All-American Scholar Team.  The criteria for selection are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 required.
