Schlothauer Registers First Double-Double of 2022 Against No. 1 Hawaii

The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team lost 3-1 to No. 1 Hawaii.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Jan. 7, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team played No. 1 Hawaii in the final match of the team's trip to the Rainbow State. After an intense match between the two teams, it was Hawaii who came out with the win as the No. 7 Ramblers lost 3-1 to the reigning national champions.

How It Happened
The first set told a similar story from the Ramblers' previous match against the Rainbow Warriors. They started the strong, exchanging points with Hawaii in the first part of the set. However, once Hawaii got in their grove, there was no stopping them. The Ramblers lost the first set 25-19.

From there, Loyola was unable to get in a rhythm. Even with key offensive plays from Parker Van Buren and Andrew Lyons, it wasn't enough to keep them in this second set as they dropped it 25-16 to Hawaii heading into the break.

Once they stepped back on the court, the Ramblers had a spark. They kept the lead through the media timeout, which is when one team reaches 15 points. From there, the momentum continued to grow for Loyola as they were able to win their first set of the season against the No. 1 Rainbow Warriors with a score of 25-18.

But the gain was short-lived for the Ramblers. The Rainbow Warriors came back with a vengeance as they went on to defeat Loyola 25-14 in the fourth and final set.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Cole Schlothauer had the most well-rounded performance for the Ramblers in tonight's match. He recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 digs and 10 kills.
  • Helping out at the pins were Van Buren and Colton Brooks. They each finished the night with double-digit kills as Van Buren had a team-high 14 and Brooks registered 11.
  • Brooks also had an outstand performance at the net. He grabbed a team-high five blocks, four of which were solo blocks.
  • Dan Mangun was a key contributor to the offense tonight for the Maroon and Gold. The setter played in his first match of the season, contributing 29 assists to the team's efforts.
  • Out of the middle, Lyons and Jimmy Meinhart helped tremendously in the front row. Both of the middles hit above .500 with Lyons securing a .556 (6 kills, 1 error, 9 attempts) hitting percentage and Meinhart registering .600 (3 kills, 0 errors, 5 attempts).
