Green Bay, Wis. - For the second consecutive match, a sputtering offense proved costly as Loyola was upended by UW-Green Bay, 3-0 (30-18, 30-27, 30-27), this afternoon at the Phoenix Sports Center in Green Bay, Wis. The loss sends the Ramblers to 6-15 (4-5 Horizon), one game behind the Phoenix, who improve to 13-10 (5-4).
Game one was all Phoenix, as it scored the first three points of the match and raced out to leads of 7-3 and 15-7 as Loyola could not find its footing. An Audrey Davis kill pulled the Ramblers within six (21-15), but it would get no closer as the hosts outhit LU, .304-.059, in the frame.
Loyola raced out to a 4-2 lead in game two before Green Bay stormed back, reeling off 10 of the next 12 points to take a 12-6 lead. A bad set gave Loyola service trailing 14-9 and Ann Deelo reeled off three more points, two on Shelby Henriksen kills, to pull LU within two, 14-12. Green Bay managed to hold the lead until Henkriksen and Sarah Elmer teamed up on a stuff to pull Loyola even at 23, prompting a Green Bay timeout. The Phoenix scored the first two points out of the break and were never headed, taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Green Bay jumped out to the early lead in game three as well, taking leads of 11-6 and 15-10 before Loyola rallied. A Courtney Ashley kill jumpstarted a 6-2 LU run that cut the deficit to one (17-16) and another Ashley kill moments later made it 22-21, but Jackie Rosen found the floor to keep the Phoenix on top and it was able to navigate the remainder of the match.
Loyola struggled offensively all day, as Green Bay outhit LU .250-.124. Freshman Audrey Davis led the way with 13 kills and was the only Rambler in double figures. Deelo led a admirable defensive effort with 20 digs, one night after posting a season-high 24 digs at Milwaukee. Rosen had 20 kills to lead the Phoenix.
Loyola, which will play the remainder of its 2005 schedule at Alumni Gym, returns to the court on Friday night when it battles Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. at Alumni Gym.
