Loyola Battles to Draw With College of Charleston, 2-2

Sept. 17, 2005

Box Score

Columbia, S.C. - First-half goals from Bill Metzger and Tony DeLuca put Loyola (1-2-1) in good position, but an 80th minute tally from College of Charleston's Rondell Honora forged a 2-2 draw in the opening match of the adidas/Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C.

Metzger gave the Ramblers a dream start in the 4th minute, poking home his own rebound after his initial shot was cleared off the line to give LU an early 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Charleston sniper Casey Gold equalized just 104 seconds later. Loyola jumped back into the lead in the 28th minute, courtesy of DeLuca, who scored on his first touch after being introduced as a substitute just 15 seconds earlier. He was able to find the back of the net off a scramble following a Dino Melitas corner and LU took the 2-1 lead into halftime. The Ramblers maintained the lead until Honora's strike 10 minutes from the finish and two overtime periods failed to resolve the deadlock.

Loyola concludes play at the Gamecock Classic on Sunday when it battles the host school, South Carolina, at 3:30 p.m.
