Late Goals Propel Loyola Past Illinois-Chicago, 2-1

Sept. 23, 2005

Box Score

CHICAGO - Senior Joe Nierzwicki completed a spirited second-half comeback by visiting Loyola (2-3-1, 1-0 Horizon), as the Ramblers came from a goal down to hand Illinois-Chicago (3-1-1, 0-1) its first loss of the season, 2-1, this evening at Flames Field.

The Flames jumped on the Ramblers early, with Pawel Otachel stealing the ball and firing home unassisted after just seven minutes. Loyola could not turn a 4-1 first-half advantage corner kick into a goal and went into intermission trailing by that lone goal. The Ramblers finally broke through in the 71st minute when Matt Marek fired home his team-best third goal of the season to even the match and waited until late to claim the game-winner, when Joe Nierzwicki headed home a Steven Graner throw-in in the 87th minute, giving Loyola its second consecutive win at Flames field.

The Ramblers owned a 13-9 edge in shots and freshman Brad Sommer made four saves to earn his first collegiate win.

Loyola returns home on Wednesday for its first match in the newly-renovated Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers welcome crosstown foe, DePaul, to Rogers Park for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
