Western Michigan Turns Back Loyola In Overtime, 3-2

Kalamazoo, Mich. - Western Michigan's Tom Oatley scored his second goal of the match less than five minutes into overtime to give the host Broncos a 3-2 win over Loyola this afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich. The loss snaps the Ramblers' modest two-match winning streak and drops the squad to 3-4-1 for the season.

It was an uphill battle all day for the Ramblers, as Oatley gave Western Michigan an early lead with a strike in the 4th minute. Loyola answered later in the half through Javier Lopez, who headed home his second goal in as many matches off a Steven Graner service in the 29th minute. Loyola dominated the opening 45 minutes statistically, outshooting the Broncos, 12-5.

Midway through the second half, WMU surged back in front, as Nashir Carabali found the back of the net in the 66th minute. With time winding down and Loyola pressing for the equalizer, senior Joe Nierzwicki delivered, heading home an Iradj Farahmand free kick in the 85th minute to send the match into overtime. However, Oatley put one past Rambler keeper Brad Sommer on the first shot of extra time to give the hosts the win.

Loyola enjoyed a 22-15 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks but could not parlay those numbers into a win.

The Ramblers waste litte time getting back on the field as they come home to face Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
