CHICAGO -
Senior Courtney Ashley totaled 16 kills and 19 digs to help Loyola to a 3-2 (30-26, 27-30, 30-22, 25-30, 15-13) win over Jacksonville State early this afternoon at the Loyola Invitational. The win is the second in succession for Loyola and bumps its record to 6-7 for the season. Jacksonville State, which was coming off a five-game win over Saint Louis last night, drops to 5-4.
Game five was a dogfight throughout, with neither team able to gain any breathing room. After a block from Shelby Henriksen and Sarah Elmer gave the Ramblers a 13-12 lead, Keily Zins found a hole to move it to match point where, after a Jacksonville State side-out, Ashley drilled one off the block for the match-winner.
Henriksen (11 kills, six blocks), Elmer (10 kills, 45 assists, six blocks, nine digs) and Melissa Craig (10 kills, six blocks) rounded out the quartet. Ann Deelo led a strong defensive effort with a match-high 24 digs.
Abbey Breit was terrific for the second consecutive match for the Gamecocks, finishing with 32 kills, 19 digs and six blocks.
A more detailed recap will follow.
