Loyola Downs UMKC In Double Overtime Thriller

Sept. 18, 2009

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sophomore Eric Marofske sent a ball deflecting off of an opposing defender into the back of the net to give the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team a 1-0 win over UMKC on Friday night (Sept. 18). The Ramblers (2-1-1) defeated the Kangaroos (1-4-0) in the second match of the UMKC Invitational.

The goal was set up when senior Michael Ferguson created a one-on-one breakaway chance against UMKC goalkeeper Ken Cooper, who denied Ferguson by making a save in the open field. Marofske sent a shot on the rebound that deflected off of a UMKC defender's arm into the net for the score.

"Our guys just kept working and working tonight," said Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz. "We had a lot of early chances that we did not finish on. That could have made our guys frustrated, but they just kept working at it and finished it."

The Ramblers out shot the Kangaroos, 23-10, including a 12-2 margin in the first half and a 5-1 margin in the overtime periods.

Rambler goalkeeper Peter McKeown denied UMKC for his third shutout of the young season, making three saves in the win.

Loyola concludes play in the UMKC Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 20) against Oral Roberts. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
