#20 Butler 48, Loyola 47
January 21, 2010
Loyola Head Coach Jim Whitesell
Opening statement
"This is a very tough loss for us and we just have to bounce back. We had too many turnovers and that hurt us. You just can't give away possessions. But when we did turn the ball over, they didn't finish as well as they normally do. On tape, we saw that they really never give up on plays - they just keep playing things through. That's one of the things that they do well, but really they do just about everything well."
On sophomore Courtney Stanley's minutes
"Well Courtney played a lot in the first half, and I talked to him at halftime about giving him an extra break. He ended up playing a lot of minutes, but it wasn't in a full-court press. We were playing them in mostly half court possessions, which isn't as taxing, but it's still hard. Butler held that three to five point lead for most of the half. You can look at Courtney's stats and say that he had a lot of turnovers, but it was our assertiveness and our ability to move without the ball that caused them. We really didn't do a good enough job in moving around, but when we did we had some good chances."
On junior Terrance Hill's last-second shot
"We wanted to run the offense and hopefully find Walt open in the post. I didn't want to take it down to the wire, since we had gotten the offensive rebound on the play before and I just wanted to get a good shot. It also wasn't necessarily designed specifically for Terrance, but he made a good read. I thought Jordan (Hicks') tip was in. I'll have to look at the tape to see if he got it off in time, but it was a good chance and I thought it was in."
Loyola junior guard Terrance Hill
On his last-second shot
"I thought it was a good look, but I probably should have taken it to the cup and tried to get a foul. That would have been a better shot than a three-pointer with the defense on me. I thought it was going to fall, and then I thought that Jordan's tip was going to fall. But that's the way the ball goes sometimes in basketball. The good thing is that we get to play on Saturday."
Loyola sophomore forward Walt Gibler
On matching up with Butler's post players
"That's how you have to play in the Horizon League, generally. You have to get in there and guys bang around. It doesn't matter who we play, that's the way it is, and Butler's no different. They're all good, physical players and they'll take it right at you. You really have to fight for every goal."
