CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell to Northern Kentucky this afternoon, 1-0, as it wrapped up play at the 50 Years of Soccer Tournament in Charleston, Ill. Today's loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Ramblers and marks the first time that they have been shutout during the 2013 season.
The Norse's Setho Moshoeshoe had the game's first opportunity when he tested Loyola goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski in the 14th minute. The Rockford, Ill. product was able to make the save to keep the game scoreless in the opening minutes. Senior Eric Nock, already with a goal to his name on the weekend, threated ten minutes later at the opposite end of the field but saw his attempt go wide.
Caleb Eastham would break the deadlock in the 30th minute when he headed a cross from Nicholas Chiarot past the Rambler netminder to give his side a 1-0 lead. The Ramblers immediately looked to respond but shots from seniors Enrique Garcia and Max Van Houten were both off target as the game headed to the halftime break at 1-0.
Eastham came close to notching his second goal of the afternoon in the 48th minute when his shot rung off of Dobrowolski's crossbar. Junior Brian Bement, who recorded the first hat trick of his career against Eastern Illinois on Friday, had one of Loyola's two shots on goal during the second half. Northern Kentucky's goalkeeper, A.J. Fleak, made the save on Bement's shot to keep his side on top.
Loyola continued to press for the tying goal. The final opportunity of the game would fall to the feet of Dane Bergstrom but the sophomore's attempt would be denied by Fleak as the Norse escaped with a 1-0 victory.
The Ramblers will now turn their attention north, up Interstate 94, for a meeting on Saturday night with the Marquette Golden Eagles. Kickoff is set for 8:05 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
