MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team fell to the Colorado College Tigers tonight by a score of 2-0 in the first game of the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. Tonight's defeat breaks Loyola's three-match unbeaten streak to start the 2013 season.
The Tigers, an NCAA tournament participant from a year ago, wasted little time in attacking the Loyola net. An early shot by Kaeli Vandersluis tested junior Monica Gonyo, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week. Jessie Ayers would score the game's opening goal off a cross by Vandersluis in the 14th minute of play.
Junior Sammy Gage registered Loyola's lone attempt on the Tiger goal in the first half. Her headed attempt would be saved by Kate Scheele.
Gonyo continued to find herself under pressure from the Colorado College attack as the first half wore on. The Tigers outshot Loyola 9-2 and forced the New Berlin, Wis. native to make three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The Ramblers came out with renewed energy after halftime and immediately went in search of an equalizer. Kara Ruffolo's shot in the 48th minute was turned away by Scheele before Valerie Gonyo provided the Ramblers with their best scoring opportunity of the evening when her shot rung off the post.
Loyola's defense continued to stand tall in support of its goalkeeper but Lynn Froetscher was able to double the Tiger lead in the 72nd minute when she snuck a shot by Gonyo from five yards out. A shot by Allison Shimer in the 86th minute proved to be Loyola's final opportunity before time ran out.
Loyola will return to action at the Marquette Invitational when it takes on the Saint Mary's Gaels on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
