Auburn, Ala. - The Loyola University Chicago softball team earned a decisive 8-0 (6) victory over Winthrop in run-rule fashion today, their second win this weekend at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala. Behind two home runs from Lauren Zaworski and Brie Pasquale, Loyola's victory moves them to 3-5 on the year.
The Ramblers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when Erica Nagel led off the frame with a double to left center, and Katy LaCivita followed it with a walk. After Zaworski reached on a throwing error, a Lauren Moore grounder allowed Nagel to score. Pasquale then pounded a homerun down the left field line to clear the bases and give Loyola a 4-0 lead.
Brittany Gardner kept the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the first, striking out two. The Ramblers came right back in the top of third took advantage of a hit batter and a walk as Zaworski hit a three-run bomb to center field, making the score 7-0.
Loyola held its seven-run lead until sixth inning, when a Pasquale single and walks drawn by Alyssa Mannucci and Olivia Bell loaded the bases for Tarran Shaffer. Shaffer's sacrifice fly to left field allowed Pasquale to score, increasing the Rambler lead to 8-0.
The Eagles could not fight back in the bottom of the sixth. Though Winthrop put one on after McKenzi Corn drew a walk, Gardner forced a groundout and a strikeout to strand the runner at second. A pop up by Sarah Allen was final out of the inning, giving Loyola the 8-0 win in run-rule fashion.
Gardner garnered the win on the mound for the Ramblers, allowing just three hits and striking out five in six innings pitched.
Zaworski and Pasquale led Loyola at the plate, each with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
The Ramblers return to action tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. when they take on Omaha in their final game of the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
