NORTH CHARLESTON - The Loyola University Chicago softball team continued its stay in South Carolina with a matchup against Charleston Southern on Wednesday, falling to the Buccaneers 4-2. Jessica Balzano led the squad, knocking in one run, while freshmen Ashley Parenti and Brooke Wyderski each crossed home plate once.
Jamie O'Brien got the Ramblers started at the top of the first inning, hitting a one-out single before Brooke Wyderski walked to put two runners on base. Ashley Parenti reached first on a fielder's choice before Hannah Jenkins reached base on an error, allowing Wyderski to score. Jessica Balzano then singled to center to field to bring Parenti home, giving the Ramblers an early 2-0 lead.
The Buccaneers started the bottom of the inning with a double and a walk before a home run knocked in three runs, giving Charleston Southern the 3-2 lead. Madison Hope was able to end the inning with two strikeouts, leaving one runner on base.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the third, as the Buccaneers led off the inning with a home run to take a 4-2 lead. The Ramblers were unable to score for the rest of the game, giving Charleston Southern the victory.
Loyola will remain in Charleston for the Holy City Showdown, hosted by College of Charleston on March 6-8. The Ramblers will play two games Friday, beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT, two games Saturday and one on Sunday.
