In Short...
Senior Morgan Reardon ripped a team-high 16 kills as Arizona defeated the Loyola University Chicago women's volleyball team, 3-1 (25-10, 14-25, 26-24, 25-17), this afternoon at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. Arizona now sits at 7-4 after picking up the win, while the Ramblers fall to 4-8.
How It Happened
Arizona controlled the tempo and led for the vast majority of the opening set. After a kill by sophomore Gabi Maciagowski tied it up at 2-2, the Wildcats erupted on a 7-0 run to open up a 9-2 advantage. The lead would balloon to nine before a block by senior Jackie Kocken and sophomore Delilah Wolf cut the deficit to 12-4. Loyola would get no closer than eight for the remainder of the frame though as Arizona rolled to a 25-10 victory.
The Maroon & Gold used an early run of its own to seize control of the second set. With Arizona up by a count of 3-2, Reardon provided bookend kills as part of a 9-1 Loyola run that saw the Ramblers surge in front, 11-4. Freshman Lauren Stefanski and Maciagowski chipped in kills later on to push the lead into double digits, 17-7. Arizona cut the margin to seven, 18-11, off of a Loyola service error but was never able to get back within striking distance. Senior Sami Hansen and Wolf combined on a stuff to clinch the second set for the Ramblers, 25-14.
After a nip and tuck start to a crucial third set, Loyola looked to assume control when it rattled off three unanswered points to take a 14-11 edge. Following a kill by sophomore Amanda Cushen that made it 16-13, Arizona used a 4-0 run to take a slim 17-16 lead. Back-to-back service aces from Cushen vaulted the Ramblers back in front, 20-19, shortly after. Loyola's lead reached 23-20 after two Wildcat errors before Kendra Dahlke hammered a pair of kills as part of a 3-0 spurt to tie the set, 23-23. Wolf gave the Ramblers an opportunity at set point, 24-23, but Arizona answered with the final three points of the frame to take to the set, 26-24, and open up a 2-1 lead in the match.
As was the case in the day's opening set, the Wildcats came out hot, establishing an 8-2 lead off of a Rambler attack error. Slowly but surely, Loyola battled its way back. Maciagowski and Stefanski teamed up on a block to cut the Arizona lead down to two, 11-9. Reardon pulled the Ramblers to within a single point, 13-12, with her third kill of the set. With its lead sitting at a perilous 16-15, a Penina Snuka kill ignited a 4-0 spurt for Arizona that saw it open up a 20-15 edge. That would prove to be the set's deciding sequence as the Wildcats closed out a 25-17 victory.
