Final Stats
CHICAGO- Despite receiving 14 shots from 10 different players, the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team couldn't find the scoreboard against Cleveland State on Friday evening. On the other sideline, however, the Vikings netted a goal in each half, insuring a 2-0 win over the Ramblers at Loyola Soccer Park.
With the loss, Loyola falls to 4-9-1 (2-1-1) on the season. Cleveland State improves to 7-5-1 (3-1-1).
While the teams split the momentum in the first half, it was Cleveland State that found the game's first goal.
In the 30th minute, Valerie Stahl gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead after swooping into the Loyola box-- where a handful of players were making a play for the ball-- then fired a shot past Rambler goalkeeper Katie Groesch.
The teams traded fouls and Cleveland State fired one last shot before the horn sounded for intermission.
In the second half, Cleveland State pushed the tempo early, and found the scoreboard once again in the 49th minute. Natalie Daniels picked up the score after neting a shot from 30 yards out over a diving Greosch.
Down 2-0, Loyola looked to get back into game with nine more shots in the final frame.
Unfortunately, the conference's current save-leader, Viking goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich, held her ground, making two late saves to secure the shutout.
Kristin Papierski led the Ramblers with four shots, one on goal. Alex Brown fired two shots and a shot on goal, as well. Daniels fired a game-high five attempts to lead Cleveland State.
Loyola will look to regroup for Sunday's conference match, when they host Youngstown State. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. CST.
