CHICAGO - The first outing for the men's soccer team was a learning experience as the Ramblers fell to Marquette 2-1 in their exhibition game in Milwaukee, Wis. on Sunday night. With 13 new additions to the roster, the young Loyola team fought to bring back a win falling just shy of the mark late in the game.
Loyola was challenged from the start with Marquette immediately putting offensive pressure on the Ramblers and eventually scoring on an own goal at the 13:34 mark. Sophomore forward Brian Bement was quick to answer for Loyola, scoring 15 yards out off an assist by sophomore forward Andrew Raymonds in the 20th minute. The goal tied the game 1-1, with the score remaining until halftime.
After the half the Ramblers worked hard to shut down the Golden Eagle offense as freshman goalie Tim Dobrowolski made two early saves. Marquette turned up the heat and with only four minutes left in the regulation period, a header by Axel Sjoberg finally found the back of the net, putting Loyola behind 2-1.
As is custom in exhibition games, two overtimes were added to the board, allowing Loyola a chance to come from behind. A shot by freshman forward Jens Undlin was all the Ramblers could come up with however, and a save by Marquette goalie Brady Walsh secured the win for the Golden Eagles.
With one exhibition game in the books, Loyola will head back to practice this week. The Ramblers next appearance will be Saturday, August 18 against Roosevelt University. The match will take place at Loyola Soccer Park at 7 p.m.
